Multi-Dimensional Decision Insights (MDDI)

Conviva Connect MDDI delivers per-minute Video experience metrics for the top cohorts across combinations of dimensions, as Parquet files in your Amazon S3 bucket.

Conviva Connect Multi-Dimensional Decision Insights (MDDI) delivers Video experience metrics broken down by combinations of dimensions, such as CDN, network and region, once a minute. Each delivery covers the previous minute, so a decision engine or operations workflow can act on current experience data without querying Conviva.

Use MDDI to steer traffic between CDNs, to find the network or region where experience is degrading, and to feed your own monitoring and alerting.

Cohorts and levels

A cohort is one combination of dimension values, for example one CDN, stream type, ASN and state, together with its metrics for the minute.

MDDI groups cohorts into levels. Each level uses a different set of dimensions, and returns its top cohorts ranked by plays. A typical setup uses three levels, each dropping one dimension from the level above:

  • Level 1: CDN, stream type, ASN, region and player name

  • Level 2: CDN, stream type, ASN and region

  • Level 3: CDN, stream type and ASN

A level with fewer dimensions rolls more traffic into each cohort, and a level with more dimensions pinpoints where a problem sits. The region dimension can be a state or a designated market area (DMA).

Delivery

Conviva delivers a data package to your Amazon S3 bucket every minute. Each package covers the previous one-minute interval, from the start of that minute to its end.

Each package is a folder for one interval, and it contains:

  • One Parquet file per level, holding that level's cohorts and their metrics.

  • A metadata file that records when processing started and when the upload to your bucket started and finished.

Load each folder as one minute of data, and place it in time by the interval it covers. The time a file arrives in your bucket is later than the interval it describes.

Metrics

Each cohort carries the metrics configured for your account. A typical set includes:

  • Attempts, Plays, Ended Plays and Concurrent Plays

  • Playing Time

  • Video Startup Time

  • Video Start Failures (technical) and Video Playback Failures (technical)

  • Rebuffering Time and Connection Induced Rebuffering Time

  • Bytes loaded

MDDI uses the same metric definitions as Conviva's real-time Video metrics.

Configuration

Conviva configures MDDI for each account. You choose:

  • The dimensions in each level.

  • How many top cohorts each level returns.

  • The metrics each cohort carries.

  • Filters that exclude traffic you don't want ranked, such as trailers or unknown values.

  • The Amazon S3 bucket and folder that receive the packages.
