The following example provides the equivalent attribute of DASH .mpd manifest files.
Avg. Peak Bitrate metric is an interval metric derived from the bandwidth field of the manifest and represents the time-weighted peak bitrate played by the player. The bits played do not include bits in buffering or bits passed during paused video. Typically, the higher the bitrate, the better the image quality and viewer experience.
Note: Avg. Peak Bitrate was formerly called Average Bitrate. In SSD and APIs, it is still called Average Bitrate.
Throughout a video session, this metric tracks the bitRate (B) and playTime (P) for each bitrate switch partition within the session. A bitrate switch occurs whenever a change in the bitrate is detected. In this example, two bitrate switches divide a video session into three bitrate partitions with bitrates (B1, B2, B3) and play times (P1, P2, P3).
The Average Peak Bitrate for the session is the total bits per session divided by the total play time of the session.
The video player passes the peak bitrates used in the video session to Conviva from the manifest player file. The passed bitrates are a combination of the playing audio and video bitrates.
Variations in player integration and bitrate availability may impact the calculation of the Average Peak Bitrate for a session.
For aggregation, this metric shows the total bits played by all sessions in a time period divided by the total playing time of these sessions.
Avg. Peak Bitrate is available in the below mentioned formats:
- Avg. Peak Bitrate Summary: the average peak bitrate during the selected time period.
- Avg. Peak Bitrate Time Series: a time series for the selected time period, where each point is the average peak bitrate during that specific interval.
Avg. Peak Bitrate also appears as a metric in Trends. For more details, see Trends.
Low Bitrate is available as a Streaming Performance Index (SPI) threshold and is displayed as an Improvement Opportunity in the Overview dashboard. Based on the SPI threshold setting, Avg. Peak Bitrate also measures SPI performance. Average Peak Bitrate also appears as a metric in Trends and other dashboards. You can also compare Average Peak Bitrate with Avg. Average Bitrate to help optimize bitrate encoding.
Note: When the value of this metric goes below the SPI threshold, the value flashes red, indicating a low bitrate and a degraded viewer experience.

- Ended Plays vs Avg. Peak Bitrate Distribution (only available in Engagement and Custom dashboards): a distribution by preset buckets, where each bucket is the Avg. Peak Bitrate (kbps) that occurred for the respective number of ended plays. This distribution can help you to understand your audience tolerance for lower bitrates and illustrates the actual impact of any bitrate outliers on the number of ended plays.
- Play Duration vs Avg. Peak Bitrate Distribution (only available in Engagement and Custom dashboards): a distribution by preset buckets, where each bucket is the average bitrate that occurred for the respective play durations. This distribution can help you to understand your audience tolerance for bitrate performance and illustrates the actual impact of any bitrate outliers on play durations.
